Brayan Bello pitched seven stellar innings and the Boston Red Sox continued their dominance of the host New York Yankees with a 1-0 victory on Friday night.
The Red Sox lead the season series 7-1 and clinched it should the teams finish tied in the standings. Boston has won the past seven meetings since New York began the season series with a 9-6 home win on June 6.
Bello (10-6) allowed three singles, struck out five and walked one. It was his third scoreless outing this season and second against New York after he allowed three hits in seven innings June 15 in Boston.
Bello won for the fourth time in five starts and allowed three runs or less for the 21st time in 23 starts this season.
The Red Sox had six hits and pushed across a run in the seventh off Mark Leiter Jr. (5-7). Nathaniel Lowe batted for Nate Eaton and doubled to the warning track in right field before trotting home on a double down the left field line by Connor Wong.
New York's Max Fried allowed four hits in six innings. The left-hander struck out seven and walked three, marking the fourth time in seven starts he issued three walks and was lifted after 99 pitches.
Bello allowed a single to Ben Rice two batters in but retired Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger to end the first. After allowing an infield hit to Trent Grisham, he got Rice on a double play grounder to end the third.
In the sixth, Austin Wells opened the inning with a single to center field but was doubled off first base on Grisham's line drive to shortstop Trevor Story
Bello ended his outing with three flyballs to Judge, Bellinger and Jazz Chisholm Jr. Garrett Whitlock fanned pinch hitter Giancarlo Stanton on three pitches to end the eighth.
Aroldis Chapman struck out two in the ninth for his 25th save as the Red Sox completed their eighth shutout of the season.
