According to the latest CDC provisional data, over 100,000 Americans died of a drug overdose in 12 months. Experts presume that the rise in fatal overdoses is directly linked to the COVID pandemic and the influx of fentanyl into the country. Law enforcement agencies across the country warn that counterfeit pills can appear identical to legitimate prescription medications, which makes it nearly impossible to know whether internet-purchased or street-purchased pain pills have been laced with fentanyl. Other drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, benzodiazepines, and now, even marijuana, are often laced with fentanyl, causing those with no tolerance to opioids to be at a much higher risk of death.
