The New England Revolution already have punched their ticket to the postseason, however their three-match winless skid and overall home record leave a bit to be desired.
The Revolution (7-6-8, 29 points) bid to improve both marks on Sunday night when they host D.C. United (5-10-6, 21 points) in Foxborough, Mass.
New England, which is 2-0-1 against D.C. United this season, allowed a late goal and lost a 1-0 decision to the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday. The result dropped the Revolution to 0-2-1 in their last three matches heading into Saturday's encounter at home, where they own a 1-3-5 record.
New England enters Saturday's tilt in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with a 1.38 points-per-game total.
"Our goal right now is finishing the season strong so we're in the best position to have home-field advantage and to not have to play that play-in game," Revolution forward Teal Bunbury said.
Bunbury, who leads New England with six goals, scored the eventual game-winning tally in the Revolution's 2-1 win over D.C. United in Washington on Aug. 25. Fellow forwards Adam Buksa and Gustavo Bou each netted two goals versus D.C. United this season and have five tallies in 2020.
D.C. United answered a nine-match winless stretch (0-6-3) by emerging victorious in each of their last three matches, including a 1-0 decision over the Columbus Crew on Wednesday. The recent surge has D.C. United just below the playoff line in the Eastern Conference.
"I feel like everybody kind of forgot about us and who we are," said Julian Gressel, who scored his second goal of the season on Wednesday.
"We've kind of embraced that over the last few weeks. We know we're going to continue to try and put ourselves in the best spot possible. And I think we're right in the mix now and we're excited, man."
Ola Kamara, who has a team-leading three goals, converted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute against New England on Aug. 25.
