The Olympics likely will take place in the summer of 2021 rather than in spring, the president of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics organizing committee said.
The Tokyo Games were postponed earlier this week because of the coronavirus pandemic, and spring wasn't ruled out as a possibility for the rescheduled dates.
"I want to offer some conclusions by the end of next week after we've mulled it over," Yoshiro Mori said on Nippon Television on Saturday. "The Games are meant to be in summer, so we should be thinking of a time between June and September."
The New York Times reported Saturday that organizers were considering July 23, 2021, as the start date, but International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams told USA Today on Sunday that was "speculation."
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were scheduled to run from July 24 to Aug. 9.
Mori said a summer start was the most realistic because it gives organizers and national federations more time for planning. That includes rescheduling qualifying for events in many nations as well as signing up volunteers in Tokyo.
"It's better for preparation time to be kept as long as possible," he said.
